LIGHTINGS

O’Brien’s work forms a continuous field of exploration.

Painting, sculpture, installations, light performances, buildings, and urban spaces are not separate disciplines, but different scales and conditions of the same inquiry:

How little is needed to create meaningful moments of perception, thought, feeling, and response?

Through reduction and focus, complexity emerges.

What appears minimal is not minimal.

What appears small is not small.

What appears simple is not simple.

At its core, the work is not about objects alone, but about ways of seeing and being. It engages questions of perception, relation, memory, presence, and how we position ourselves in the world. The works create conditions in which viewers can find their own place—visually, physically, emotionally, and intellectually. The Lightings represent a further development within this trajectory.  They condense concerns that have shaped O’Brien’s work for decades—light, space, material, perception, architecture, and art—into a single object. Neither painting nor sculpture, neither image nor luminaire, they occupy a territory between representation and presence, where light becomes both subject and material.
